    What I work on

So, what kinds of books do I work on?

I love variety and work on many types of books—including (but not limited to): cookbooks, educational, fiction, nonfiction, poetry, art books, and magazines.

My favorite projects are the most complex and detailed.

So if you have a dense book or one with lots of elements that require special attention for print and digital considerations, send them my way!

I love to troubleshoot and excel at detail-oriented jobs (so cookbooks, textbooks, legal manuals—those are all my jam).

    My Services

    Interior Design

Interior designs are strategic and heavily influenced by the publication’s material and your goals.

I never use templates. I always create a custom interior design for every publication based on its unique needs.

A book’s interior design shouldn’t be stale, but it also shouldn’t overpower. I make every design decision with your reader in mind.

You might be surprised just how much a book’s interior plays a role in readers finishing (and enjoying!) your book. Just like User Experience (UX) is all-important in web design, the Reader Experience (RX) is the priority in book design.

    Typesetting

Typesetting minimizes distractions that interrupt comprehension, contributing to a seamless reading experience.

When typesetting, I ensure publications are polished and align with industry standards.

This includes avoiding stacks (word/punctuation/hyphenation), utilizing appropriate hyphenation, keeping numbers and their measurements together, watching out for widows and orphans while ensuring spreads are balanced, and plenty more.

I ensure readers are focused on your content—not getting tripped up over silly typesetting issues.

    Cover Design

A cover design visually represents your publication’s words and ideas through typography, imagery, color, and layout.

When designing a book cover, I consider your goals, target audience, genre, book cover trends (and whether to lean in or stray away from them), marketability, and its cohesion with the interior.

    Ebook Conversion

Ebook conversion is far more than exporting a file—it involves strategic decisions and manual intervention to transform your print layout into an accessible and compliant digital publication.

With accessibility best practices becoming a wider concern, offering compliant ebooks is a great way to ensure your publication doesn’t exclude those with print disabilities.

In every ebook I create, I strive to ensure accessibility best practices are met through validation as well as manual intervention, working toward EAA/WCAG standards.

      Testimonials

Here's some kind things people have said about me...

Hadley is stellar with her communication and organization.

I found her notes at each stage to be super helpful, whether they were about her design choices, things she was flagging for us to keep an eye on, questions, or general notes about where the project started, its current stage, and next steps.

Hadley’s clear communication helps close any gaps that can happen when working remotely and makes it easier for me to manage the project.

She is very thoughtful with her work and brings great technical knowledge to the table. It is a pleasure to work with her!

      Natalie Lundgren

Editorial Assistant at Hardie Grant North America

Hadley is hands-down the most organized person I’ve ever worked with, and her design skills are top notch.

      Christine Neulieb

      Editorial Director at Lanternfish Press

Hadley exceeded our expectations through her professionalism, promptness, and thoroughness, especially in the face of a growing challenging project. I appreciated how transparent she was with us, as well as her ability to make the nuances of web development, WordPress, Stripe, hosting, etc. accessible and understandable to us.

Her bold design impulses and willingness to take on a growth project, as well as her commitment to small press publishers, made her a stand out candidate.

Hadley is prompt and responsive, proactively communicating updates, changes to thinking and workflow, and question asking. Because Spout isn’t my day job, I appreciated the flexibility to use Hadley’s calendar to book times with her as my schedule changed. Invoices, client portal, etc. were very clear and user-friendly.

As a result, we now have a stellar website that I am proud to advertise and will make our operations more sustainable in the long run.

      Xander Gershberg

      Editor at Spout Press

Hadley is SO organized and efficient!

And the client portal really is a fantastic tool.

We’ve never worked with a more professional designer.

Every step was outlined clearly and follow through impeccable and the fact that she was willing to work with the author directly meant there were no middlemen, so to speak.

      Cati Porter

Former Executive Director at Inlandia Institute

Hadley Hendrix is creative, communicative, accommodating, and professional at each step of the design process.

I appreciated the mood boards she assembled for us, and the thoughtful annotations she provided with each design option.

I appreciated that she was able to work from, and adjust to, multiple streams of input and feedback—from her own response to the text, my initial editorial brief, and the author’s reaction to the proposed designs—all of which culminated in a final design that works beautifully for the book.
